Update to Apple CarPlay will take over the dashboard
The Californian tech giant announced big updates to it's popular iPhone feature, CarPlay at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).
CarPlay is currently limited to the car's infotainment screen, which is usually located on the centre console. The new update expected to be released in late 2023 will expand CarPlay to all screens in the car, giving the driver the option to change what is shown on the instrument panel, add widgets such as a weather and calendar widget, and even control the air conditioning and heated seats so they'll never have to exit CarPlay.
Apple's website says: "This next generation of CarPlay is the ultimate iPhone experience for the car. It provides content for all the driver’s screens including the instrument cluster, ensuring a cohesive design experience that is the very best of your car and your iPhone. Vehicle functions like radio and temperature controls are handled directly from CarPlay. And personalisation options ranging from widgets to selecting curated gauge layouts ensure the experience is unique to the driver."
